Preston Trip December 2nd/3rd 2006
On the way we stopped for lunch at the village of Peover Heath at the Dog Inn. Impressive multi-roomed country pub/restaurant with an extensive menu and four real ales - Weetwood best bitter 3.8%, Copper Dragon IPA 4.4%, Hydes Bitter 3.8% and Moorhouses Black Cat 3.4%. We tried the Weetwood and Copper Dragon and enjoyed both. Our hotel room wasn't ready so we headed for the bar, no real ale, so we had a of Czech Bud each. At £3.30 each for the 250ml bottle, we didn't have another! Straight up the town to the Old Black Bull, a very popular and noisy town centre pub with several TV screen and too smoky for us we only tried one of their 6 beers each, Wells Eagle IPA 3.6% and Wickwar BOB 4% neither to our taste. We moved on to the next nearest GBG pub, the Britannia Inn. Quieter, much less smoky and room to sit, we drank George Wright Blue Moon 4.9%. This was superb and bang on our taste, so there was no point going anywhere else, especially when we got into conversation with four locals sitting next to us and spent a great afternoon/evening swapping stories. We staggered out a couple of hours later as we had booked a meal at the Winkley Square Chop House, one of Paul Heathcote's restaurants. An excellent meal, washed down with a Chimay White 8% just about finished us of. We where in bed for 9.30pm. We both felt fragile the next day but managed to do the sight seeing we wanted to do (Bridget was born in Preston) and follow the Town Trail in spite of the gale force winds. We also took in the Harris Museum which had a corner dedicated to Bridget's Godfather - Tom Finney. An evening dinner at the Chop House again, this time accompanied by Staropramen and then back to the Britannia Inn. Disappointment there however the Blue Moon had gone . Roosters Necta 5% was an adequate replacement though. Another local, who was in the Anchor, Brum, last week and left some flyers there, told us of a new real ale pub with a festival on, the Bitter Suite in Fylde Street. It's not in the GBG yet but probably will be next year.
